Gallipoli makes a first base for the Ionian coast and an old town by the sea, if you have a car. The area has 13 stays on The Puglia Edit in four comuni, seven in Gallipoli, three in Nardò, two in Ugento and one in Porto Cesareo, and eleven confirm a pool. Is Puglia worth visiting? weighs the trip as a whole before you pick an area.
Ugento is part of the area too, with two stays at Torre San Giovanni: Masseria Fontanelle and Vivosa Apulia Resort.
Gallipoli’s comune says the name comes from the Greek kale polis, beautiful city. Its port became, within two centuries, the Mediterranean’s main base for the trade in lampante oil, literally lamp oil.
A bridge joins the old town and the new one. The cathedral of Sant’Agata, built between 1629 and 1696, is in the comune’s words the most representative monument of Gallipoli baroque.
Italia.it describes a coast of long sandy stretches alternating with cliffs, and names Punta della Suina, Lido Pizzo and Porto Selvaggio as beaches to visit. It also says the lidos turn into discos at night.
The comune lists a regional park among the sights, Isola di Sant’Andrea e litorale di Punta Pizzo, created by regional law in 2006. What is on in town is listed on Andiamo in Puglia’s Gallipoli page (in Italian).
Nardò has seaside districts, called marine, at Santa Maria al Bagno and Santa Caterina. Porto Cesareo has a state marine reserve of 16,654 hectares, which also covers the Nardò shoreline. For the town and its reserve, Andiamo in Puglia has a page on what to see around Porto Cesareo, in Italian.
Four of the 13 are boutique hotels, four are masserie, the historic farm estates of southern Italy, three are palazzi, and the rest are a resort and a hotel. Seven sit in estimated price band 3, among them Palazzo Flora, Palazzo Presta, Hotel Torre Assunta and Masseria Donna Menga, a five-star hotel in a 15th-century masseria near Nardò.
Five are in band 2, among them Le Dune Suite Hotel, and Masseria Corsano is in band 4. How we select says how a band is set and when it is only an estimate.
Six stays have a spa, while Palazzo Presta and Palazzo Flora say they have none. Five host weddings by their own account.
Opening months are confirmed for six stays. Le Dune Suite Hotel says it is open all year, Palazzo Colombo, Palazzo Flora and Palazzo Presta say March to November, and Masseria Donna Menga says April to early November. The Regione Puglia register gives Vivosa Apulia Resort May to October. Read Puglia in autumn and winter before you plan a winter trip.
Opening months are confirmed for six of the 13 stays. Le Dune Suite Hotel says it welcomes guests every day of the year, Palazzo Colombo, Palazzo Flora and Palazzo Presta say they are open from March to November, Masseria Donna Menga lists April to early November, and the Regione Puglia register gives Vivosa Apulia Resort May to October. Ask the other seven before you plan a winter trip. Italia.it says the beach lidos turn into discos in the evening, so check where a stay sits if you want quiet. Puglia's regional content on the same portal adds that the water is still warm in autumn.
Brindisi (BDS) is the nearest civil airport according to Gallipoli's comune, and Bari (BRI) is the alternative if the connection from your city is better. By train, Palazzo Presta and Palazzo Flora both say on their sites that the train and bus stations are a few kilometers away; Presta arranges private transfers from the stations, and Flora offers private transfers from Brindisi and Bari airports. Le Dune Suite Hotel in Porto Cesareo names Lecce station, 30 km away, with a bus onward. By car, Masseria Bernardini in Nardò gives the A14 to Bari, then road 16 bis towards Lecce. Gallipoli's old and new towns are joined by a bridge, so ask your stay about access and parking.

Gallipoli's comune says the name comes from the Greek kale polis, beautiful city. A bridge joins the old and new towns. The cathedral of Sant'Agata, built between 1629 and 1696, is described as the most representative monument of Gallipoli baroque. The comune counts two ports, an old one near the Greek fountain and a merchant port.
Italia.it describes long sandy stretches alternating with cliffs, and names Punta della Suina, Lido Pizzo and Porto Selvaggio among the beaches to visit. Le Dune Suite Hotel in Porto Cesareo lists a beach club opposite the hotel. Check each stay page for what it confirms, because not every stay states a beach.
The Porto Cesareo marine protected area is a state marine reserve of 16,654 hectares with 32 km (20 mi) of coast, according to the Porto Cesareo comune. It covers the shoreline of Porto Cesareo and Nardò. Le Dune Suite Hotel is in Porto Cesareo, and Masseria Bernardini, Masseria Corsano and Masseria Donna Menga are in Nardò.
Five of the 13 stays say on their own sites that they host weddings: Le Dune Suite Hotel, Masseria Bernardini, Masseria Corsano, Masseria Macchiaforte and Hotel Torre Assunta. The other eight have not said, so ask them before you rule them out.
Seven stays are estimated in band 3, which is €450 to €750 a night for a double room in high season. Five are in band 2, €250 to €450, among them Le Dune Suite Hotel, and Masseria Corsano is in band 4, €750 to €1,200. None of the 13 shows a rate we could read, so ask for your dates.
