Why it’s on the Edit

I Luoghi di Pitti is the Masseria San Giovanni delle Matine, a 16th-century farm in the countryside near Altamura, in the Alta Murgia and Castel del Monte area. It is run mainly as a wedding venue by the Moramarco family, who say they have worked in hospitality since 1984. Ask first if you want a quiet bed.

The estate began as a casale for neighboring communities, and the family says it became the noble residence of the Sabini counts in the 16th century. In January 2001 the family acquired the ruin of the masseria.

The price band is 2 of 5, an estimate, since no official rate was found. The Regione Puglia register lists it as a four-star hotel.

The rooms

The relais has ten rooms, which the site describes as colored by stone, frescoed with 18th-century paintings and furnished with pieces by local artists and craftsmen. They were once noble homes.

The site names three suites. Nontiscordardime has soft violet walls. Dalupupa is named for the hoopoe and sits under an imposing noble arch.

Giailù takes its name from an anagram of Luigi and Luigia, and it has wide vaults and a round bed. The seven other rooms are named Meriggio, La vita, La luna, Volare, Mama, Divina and Quaggiù. Sizes and bed types are not confirmed here.

Every room page lists the same services: centralized air conditioning, heating, a hairdryer, Wi-Fi, a minibar, a safe, a direct phone, laundry and 24-hour room service. An extra bed or a cot can be requested, subject to the hotel’s confirmation.

The relais is presented first to couples and their guests, but the site carries an availability form for the suites. Ask whether a wedding is booked on your dates.

Eating and drinking

The restaurant takes bookings for lunch or dinner. The site describes cooking in which renowned tradition meets the flavors of the Murgia in a Mediterranean mood, and it stresses local raw materials.

The family has been specialized in pastry for more than 40 years.

A lounge bar sits beside the porch, which connects directly to the main hall and looks down on the amphitheater. Soft lights illuminate the amphitheater. A menu and opening days are not confirmed here.

The setting

The farm stands on the SP159 near Altamura, at the foot of the Alta Murgia National Park. The way in is an avenue of oaks and holm oaks, then olive trees, strawberry trees and aromatic plants.

The older parts stand out: halls cut in tuff, underground rooms that seat more than 200 and the neviera, a cellar where snow was once gathered and stored. The site traces the place back to a Neolithic village found nearby.

For outings it names the cathedral of Altamura, Matera, Castel del Monte, the two gravine, the Pulo and a bauxite quarry.

Who it suits, and who should look elsewhere

For a pool, a spa or a hotel with an everyday program, look elsewhere. Biomasseria Lama di Luna is a farm with rooms, a pool and a restaurant for overnight guests.
