The rooms

The hotel describes its furnishings as simple and functional. Every room has an LCD TV, air conditioning, a phone, a fridge, a shower with bidet, a hairdryer, a desk, slippers and free Wi-Fi, with laundry service at extra cost.

The Double rooms (17 m², up to 2 people) are in the main building, and most have a small balcony over the pine wood. The Triples (17 m², up to 3) sit in the pine wood with a small furnished patio, and the third bed is an armchair bed or a single.

The Family rooms (23 m², up to 4) are in the small villas scattered among the pines, with armchair beds or two single beds. The register lists rooms suited to guests with disabilities.

The double room page lists an interior or pine-wood view. If you want the sea from your window, ask the hotel before you pick a room.

The building follows the island’s traditional style, says the hotel, with roofs that never rise above the trees and white plaster that keeps out the heat of the sun.

Eating and drinking

The restaurant builds its menus on fresh fish caught in local waters and served the same day, inspired by the traditional dishes of the Tremiti. The hotel stresses fresh local ingredients and simple cooking, served in a bright dining room that looks onto the pine wood.

Breakfast is served by the pool and is included, according to the register, with continental, local and American options. The register also lists vegetarian and coeliac-friendly cooking, so say so when you book.

The bar serves cocktails, coffee and snacks, and the evenings have a piano bar. The hotel names no chef and no signature dish. Ask whether half board is offered for your dates.

The setting

The Tremiti are five islands: San Nicola (the administrative center), San Domino, Capraia, Cretaccio and Pianosa. Together they form a nature reserve inside the Gargano National Park. San Domino is almost entirely covered by Aleppo pines and Mediterranean scrub.

The hotel’s list of places to reach includes the Grotta delle Viole, the Grotta del Bue, the Pagliai rocks, the lighthouse, Cala delle Arene and Cala Tramontana. The village has shops, night spots, the church and a first-aid post. Across the water on San Nicola, the Benedictine abbey dates to 1045.

The sea sets the program. italia.it counts over twenty underwater trails for snorkeling, the hotel lists canoes, daily boat trips, dinghy rental and diving centers, and Capraia and Cretaccio are uninhabited islands reached by boat. Pianosa has been an integral reserve since 1989: no transit, mooring, swimming or fishing.

On land the hotel has a pool with loungers and umbrellas, bocce courts and ping pong tables. At Cala Tramontana guests get loungers and umbrellas, and a private platform costs extra.

Who it suits, and who should look elsewhere

Hotel Kyrie suits families with children: a mini club, baby sitting, play areas, a pool and Family rooms for 4 in the villas. It suits snorkelers and divers who want several days on the Tremiti, with transfers on the island handled by the hotel’s free minibus.

Look elsewhere if you want quiet evenings or an adults-only mood, since the hotel has an entertainment team and a piano bar. Look elsewhere too if you want a sea view from the room, more than 17 to 23 m² or a luxury finish: the hotel calls its furnishings simple and functional.

If one day on the Tremiti is enough, sleep on the mainland instead. Baia delle Zagare Resort, on the Gargano coast near Mattinata, books boat trips to the islands and has two guest-only coves.

Getting there

Most visitors reach the Tremiti by sea. Fly into Bari, the nearer of the two main Puglia airports, then drive to a port. The hotel names Termoli as the main departure point, running all year, and adds that summer brings extra links from the Gargano.

The hotel’s directions use the A14 motorway to the Termoli exit, then the signs for the port. Several companies run ships and hydrofoils. Check crossings and times with the boat operator when you book the room.

You cannot take a car across: park at the port and board on foot. On San Domino, a free hotel minibus runs between the island port and Hotel Kyrie. The hotel also mentions a helicopter service from Foggia.
