Why it’s on the Edit

Masseria Aprile is an agriturismo, a working farm that lets rooms, outside Locorotondo in the Valle d’Itria. The masseria (a Puglian farm estate) was built in 1700 and has belonged to the Aprile family ever since. Anna Maria Aprile, the twelfth generation, lives in the stone manor house with her family.

The family restored the buildings in 1992 and opened the agriturismo in August 1996. The farm covers 25 hectares: a large threshing floor, pastures edged by old woods you can walk through, an olive grove, a vineyard and 17th-century trulli.

It is on the Edit for that: 8 units in buildings that kept their farm names, a family on site and price band 1 of 5. The 2026 Regione Puglia register files it in two categories, agriturismo lodging with 6 rooms and 19 beds and a rooms-for-rent entry with 3 rooms and 6 beds, and the site prints both registration codes.

The rooms

Six of the 8 units are trulli. The Trullo del Massaio, from the 1600s, was the home of the farm manager’s family; at 55 square meters it sleeps four, with a kitchen corner and a chromotherapy shower. Trullo Conigliera, Trullo Pollaio and Trullo di Rosa are 30 square meter trulli for two from the 1600s, restored with lime and cocciopesto (a crushed-brick plaster), each with a tea corner, a fridge and a shaded terrace.

Trullo Casaro, from the 1700s, once stored cheese and is the smallest trullo at 20 square meters, shaded by an old oak. Trullo Fienile, a 1700s hay store, has two separate rooms in 30 square meters and a terrace in the olive grove, for three guests plus an extra bed.

The two vaulted units have kitchens. The Palmento, built in 1900 for pressing grapes, has 20 square meters inside and 40 outside, with two verandas and a covered kitchen corner. The Suite Stalla is a 1700s stable of 60 square meters under a cummersa, the barrel vault typical of the area, with the old mangers and dovecote, a kitchen corner and two armchair beds; its fireplace cannot be used.

Every unit has its own entrance, air conditioning, Wi-Fi and free daily cleaning with a change of linen, and most have underfloor heating.

Eating and drinking

Masseria Aprile serves breakfast as a buffet in a stone coach house from 1915 or on the veranda beside it, which looks toward Locorotondo. The buffet puts homemade cakes, biscuits and jams next to bread from the wood oven, butter, capocollo from Martina Franca or salami with cheese, fresh dairy of the day, tomatoes with the farm’s own olive oil and eggs from its hens.

The oil comes from a few trees of Puglian varieties: Nociara, Leccina, Ogliarola and the local Nozzarola. The farm sells it, along with its own white and red wine and jams, and offers guests a tasting of its products in the breakfast room.

For the rest of the day there is an honesty bar, always open, where you help yourself. Three units have kitchen corners, and the owners put Locorotondo within walking distance, which makes dinner in town an easy plan.

The setting

Masseria Aprile stands in the countryside of Locorotondo, a Valle d’Itria town the masseria describes with concentric lanes paved in pale stone and cummerse roofs. The countryside around it is scattered with contrade, small clusters of trulli, and the masseria counts more than 100 of them in the comune.

The comune’s own pages cover the landmarks. The Madonna della Greca is the oldest church in Locorotondo, first built between the 7th and 8th centuries and rebuilt in the 15th, with a basilica plan and three aisles. The Mother Church of San Giorgio went up between 1790 and 1825 among the ruins of two earlier churches.

Masseria Ferragnano, another farm the comune describes, dates back to 1500; its monumental Italian-style garden gained a belvedere pavilion in 1833 for looking over the countryside.

On the farm itself there is a yard with hens, a small chapel where Anna Maria Aprile was married, and Chicca the donkey, whom the owner counts as family. Children get a trampoline, swings and a slide in front of the rooms, and a large play structure in the woods.

Who it suits, and who should look elsewhere

Couples and families who want a farm with hens, a donkey and a breakfast made on site get one here, at the lowest price band on the Edit. The Suite Stalla and the Trullo del Massaio sleep four with a kitchen corner, so they are the family picks.

Look elsewhere if a pool is a must: the official pages describe a garden hot tub open in June, July and August and do not confirm a pool. Masseria Grofoleo, in the same contrada, is a four-star hotel in an 18th-century court of trulli and cummerse with an outdoor pool with hydromassage. For a pool and a restaurant with a chef, Masseria Trulli e Vigne near Martina Franca has 13 suites.

Getting there

Masseria Aprile is outside Locorotondo, in the Valle d’Itria. Brindisi airport is the nearer of the two in a straight line, and the owners list Bari and Brindisi at the same distance, so choose by flight.

Set your sat nav to Strada Comunale Ronziello 25, Locorotondo, as the owners advise, or use the GPS coordinates on their contacts page. Locorotondo has a station on the Sud-Est line, and the owners run transfers from the airport or the station on request.

Rent a car all the same: in the Valle d’Itria the towns, the contrade and the coast are separate trips. Parking is inside the property.
