Why it’s on the Edit

The estate was founded in the Middle Ages as a refuge for Basilian monks, who left a settlement of caves dug into the rock, and some of those traces survive. In Norman times it became a defensive garrison against Saracen raids, with watchtowers and underground oil mills.

In the eighteenth century the De Marco family turned it into a refined rural residence, and today it is a small hotel of 19 rooms. The masseria says it dominates the Capo d’Otranto, and its address is in the park of Porto Badisco. The Regione Puglia list for 2026 files it as a three-star hotel.

That history is the reason to look at it. You get a pool, a tennis court, a bar and a restaurant, and a setting that has been lived in for centuries.

The rooms

All 19 rooms are doubles, and some can take a third bed or a cot. They are spread over the estate: some overlook the inner courtyard near the restaurant and reception, others are a few meters further down, in small houses.

The Standard is the simplest, 16 square meters with one double bed and its own entrance. A step up are the ground-floor rooms, with a furnished outdoor area, and the Superior adds a private patio on the garden and a whirlpool bath. The Suite is the most spacious, at 40 square meters, with a sea view, a private balcony, a tub and a shower with chromotherapy, and an independent entrance.

Accessible rooms exist. Parking on site is free.

Eating and drinking

The restaurant serves Salento recipes revisited, with 0 km ingredients selected from small local producers. Dinner is in a former stable from the early twentieth century, with star vaults and walls of Lecce stone. In summer you can dine outdoors, with the sea and the Tower of Sant’Emiliano in view.

Lunch is limited. The masseria serves only cold dishes at midday, such as Salento friselle, salads and crostini. At dinner you can choose à la carte, from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m., or half board from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., with a starter, a first course and a main from a mini menu that changes daily.

For something private, the masseria offers a four-course dinner among the olive trees with a dedicated chef, all year, by booking.

The setting

Centuries-old olive groves, hidden paths and dry-stone walls surround the buildings. The masseria places itself near Porto Badisco, within reach of the beaches of Otranto, with natural coves a short drive away.

The sea is not at the gate, so plan to drive for a swim and come back to the pool. The masseria also offers a private gentle yoga class outdoors, and a private boat tour from Otranto harbor along the Adriatic coast to sea caves and hidden coves, with a chance to swim.

Good to know

  • Pets are not accepted.
  • All 19 rooms are doubles. A third bed or cot is possible in some.
  • Lunch is cold dishes only. Dinner is à la carte or half board.
  • Accessible rooms and free parking on site.
  • Not confirmed here: opening months, children’s facilities and a spa.
  • Price band: 2 of 5 (estimated: no official rate found).

Who it suits, and who should look elsewhere

It suits couples and small groups who want to sleep inside a medieval estate, dine in a stone stable and swim in the pool between drives to the coast. A Suite with a sea view and a tub is the room to ask about.

Travelers with a dog, or who want a hot lunch at the masseria or a walk to the water, should look elsewhere. Masseria Mongiò dell’Elefante has a path to the Baia dei Turchi beach. Palazzo de Mori sits in Otranto’s old town.

Getting there

Masseria Panareo is on the coast road between Otranto and Santa Cesarea Terme, in the Otranto and the Adriatic Salento area. Brindisi is the nearer of the two airports and the one the masseria names, with Bari further north. The masseria notes that Brindisi airport is linked to Lecce station by bus.

You need a car. The beaches, the town and its restaurants are separate trips from the gate.
