Principe Relais & Spa is a bed and breakfast with a spa, in a palazzo of the early 1900s in the old town of Gravina in Puglia, in the Alta Murgia and Castel del Monte area. The building was fully renovated, in keeping with the architectural style of its period, and the relais describes itself as quiet and welcoming.

The rooms

There are four types. Standard rooms are 26 m² and furnished in a contemporary style with large bathrooms, for up to four guests. The Deluxe room, Le 4 Fontane, is 35 m² with a private hammam with chromotherapy and a private terrace.

The Superior rooms, named L’Orologio, La Cattedrale and Fondovito, are about 40 m² and sleep up to six, which suits families. The Luxury room, Il Bastione, is 45 m² with a hammam and a mini hydromassage pool on a private terrace of 25 m².

Every type lists free Wi-Fi, soundproofing, heating, air conditioning, a phone, a beauty kit, an extra bed or a cot, and breakfast.

Eating and drinking

The site describes breakfast as included and does not describe a restaurant. One spa package for two includes a double room, spa entry, the tea zone and a standard breakfast served in the room.

Dinner is a matter for the town of Gravina in Puglia.

Opening hours for a bar, a restaurant and room service are not confirmed here.

The setting

The relais is in the historic center of Gravina in Puglia, on Via XX Settembre. You step out into the old town, not a garden.

The spa is the draw. It sits among hypogea, underground chambers, and lists a Turkish bath, a sauna, an emotional shower, a hydromassage with a neck waterfall, a salt grotto and a relaxation zone with a tea tasting. Day packages for couples and groups are sold as well, and a day-use offer gives you a standard room for the day together with the spa.

Spa hours are 9:30 to 13:00 and 15:30 to 21:00, with continuous hours on request.

The main circuit, called Percorso da Principe, lasts 90 minutes. The Turkish bath runs at 45 degrees with chromotherapy and aromatherapy, and the sauna at 90. The site says booking it means exclusive use of the spa for your party. A separate group circuit is sold for 4 to 10 guests.

Massages are sold separately, among them a candle massage of 60 minutes, lymphatic drainage by the Vodder method and a deep-tissue massage of 50 minutes. A hairdresser can blow-dry your hair after the spa. Reception is staffed from 9:00 to 13:00 and from 16:00 to 20:00.

Who it suits, and who should look elsewhere

Couples and friends who want a night or two with a hammam and a salt grotto, in the old town, are the natural fit. Families can use the Superior rooms, which sleep up to six.

Look elsewhere if you want a pool, a restaurant in the building or a farm. Hotel San Nicola is a four-star hotel in the historic Palazzo Cagnazzi, in the old town of Altamura.

Principe Relais & Spa is in the old town of Gravina in Puglia, in the Alta Murgia and Castel del Monte area. Bari is the nearer airport.

The old town is the place to explore on foot, so ask the relais where to leave the car.
