Why it’s on the Edit

Palazzo Guglielmo is a four-star albergo diffuso in Vignacastrisi, a hamlet of Ortelle. An albergo diffuso is a hotel whose rooms are spread over several buildings of a village.

The setting

Palazzo Guglielmo stands on Piazza Umberto, in the village of Vignacastrisi. The Regione Puglia’s small-ports portal describes Vignacastrisi as a pleasant place in the south-east of Salento, close to the Adriatic shore. It names Palazzo Guglielmo, on Piazza Umberto I, as the heart of the hamlet, once a noble residence and now a refined guest house.

In the historic center the main buildings are the mother church, an old defensive fortress dedicated to the Immaculate, and the nineteenth-century church of the Rosary. Just outside the village, the Canali area is a small stretch of nature with the scent of Mediterranean scrub and paths between dry-stone walls.

On the tourism portal Italia.it, Castro is a town perched on a cliff above the Adriatic, and Santa Cesarea Terme is a spa town whose sulphur water comes from four natural caves along the coast. Nearby, the small town of Giurdignano is considered the megalithic garden of Italy, surrounded by dolmens, menhirs and ancient stones.

The small-ports portal places Vignacastrisi in the comune of Ortelle, which gathers around its seventeenth-century mother church of Saint George, with a portal crowned by a blessing Christ. It also lists the crypt of the Madonna della Grotta, a sign that the area was visited as early as the Middle Ages. Local tastes it names are pirilla, a seasoned bread, and the meat of the Or.Vi. piglet.

A pool, a garden and a spa are not confirmed here.

Who it suits, and who should look elsewhere

Pick Palazzo Guglielmo for a village base, with rooms spread over several buildings and a restaurant in the same hotel, if you are happy to drive to the coast.

For facts on rooms, a pool or a spa before you book, start elsewhere. Masseria Panareo publishes 19 double rooms, a pool, a tennis court and a restaurant with lunch and dinner arrangements. Palazzo de Mori publishes room sizes from 16 to 100 square meters and a breakfast terrace, and it sits inside Otranto’s old town.

Getting there

Palazzo Guglielmo is on Piazza Umberto in Vignacastrisi, in the Otranto and the Adriatic Salento area. Brindisi is the airport to book, since Bari lies more than twice as far in a straight line.

You need a car. Otranto, the coast and the restaurants of the area are separate trips from the village.
