The comune’s territory includes the Torre Guaceto reserve on the Adriatic coast, a state nature reserve of 1,116 hectares and 8 kilometers of coast. It protects a wetland of international importance and the marine reserve around it.

The Torre Guaceto tower, from the 16th century, was built to defend a coast raided often by Saracens. The comune says the place name comes from the Arabic root “Gau”, meaning fresh running water, and that the tower has a square base and large machicolations on each side, typical of the coastal towers of the Kingdom in the land of Otranto.

Today the tower holds an observatory run with the WWF and a small museum. Finds of flint and pottery from prehistory, and large lead anchors found on the seabed, show that people have used this bay for a very long time.
