Grand Hotel La Chiusa di Chietri counts its rooms by the hundred: 8 suites, 32 deluxe rooms with balcony and jacuzzi, and 98 standard rooms. A separate Trulli Village of twelve trulli, dated to the 17th century, sits alongside them.

The combination is the reason it is here, a full-size hotel with real trulli to sleep in. The grounds hold large gardens, a historical lake and an olive grove that the hotel calls a hundred years old.

Where you sleep

The trulli are the more interesting choice. They differ in size and capacity, they are furnished in a simple, comfortable vintage style after a conservative restoration, and all have a panoramic patio, air conditioning or heating, a desk, a safe and a minibar. The hotel’s list names an Imperial Suite, three Deluxe Superior, four Superior and eight Romantic trullo rooms.

A Deluxe Trullo has a sleeping area with a double bed or two separate beds, and a relaxation area with a two-seater sofa.

Eating and drinking

Nobis is the hotel restaurant. Its chefs use ancient Apulian recipes and reinvent them with new and surprising combinations. Dinners are also served by candlelight in the green areas or in a small rustic restaurant.

The services list adds a bar and a cafeteria, menus for special diets on request, and breakfast in your room. Cooking lessons and theme dinner evenings appear among the activities, and a half-board night is one of the offers.

The setting

Aura Sylva Spa is the second draw, which its own page calls a box of emotions. The hotel recreated a Roman path in it, says it was designed in accordance with a strict holistic philosophy, and keeps a small art gallery inside. Banquets, ceremonies, meetings and congresses head the hotel’s own list of settings, so expect other groups in the building. Skip it if you want a small, quiet masseria: Masseria San Michele has seven rooms. A dog rules it out, since animals are not allowed. For a spa on a farm, try Masseria Torricella.
