The best time to visit Puglia, month by month

The short version

Italia.it points to May, June and September for beach days at Torre dell'Orso, with July and August as the peak, but it gives no figures, so we publish none. As of October 27, 2026, only 25 of the 169 stays on The Puglia Edit confirm their opening months, and 12 of them say they are open all year. Ask each stay before you book.

When is the best time to visit Puglia?

For the Salento coast, we suggest May and June or September if you want the sea without the peak of July and August. Italia.it, the national tourism portal, says the weather is still good enough for beach days from May to June and in September at Torre dell’Orso, and names July and August as the peak. Two Gallipoli stays give a similar window.

We do not publish temperatures, rainfall, sea temperatures or sunshine hours without a dated official source, and we do not hold one yet. So every month below is described in words, from what a named source says.

The second limit is opening months, which most stays do not state. A good month on paper can still be a closed month for your stay, so use the table, then ask the property.

What is each month like?

Italia.it names May, June and September as good beach months and July and August as the peak, and two stays call April and October quieter. The table gives the detail. It lists only what a named source confirms, and a gap means we found nothing dated, not that nothing happens.

Month What the sources confirm
January Nothing on the sea or the weather in our sources. Only the 12 stays that open all year confirm they are open.
February Nothing dated in our sources. Only the 12 year-round stays confirm they are open.
March Palazzo Colombo, Palazzo Flora and Palazzo Presta in Gallipoli and Masseria Terre di Traiano in Andria say they open from March, and the Region’s register lists Masseria Baroni Nuovi near Brindisi and Hotel Residence Il Porto in Mattinata from March.
April Palazzo Flora and Palazzo Presta call April a quieter month for a visit, before the sea season they place from May. Four more stays open in April, among them Hotel Kyrie on the Isole Tremiti.
May Italia.it says beach days are still good from May at Torre dell’Orso. The two Gallipoli stays place the sea season from May, and all 25 stays that give their months are open.
June Beach days are good in May and June at Torre dell’Orso, by the same italia.it page.
July Peak month at Torre dell’Orso. Towns run summer festivals and programs, such as the Festival della Valle d’Itria.
August Peak month at Torre dell’Orso. Towns keep their summer calendars running.
September Beach days are still good at Torre dell’Orso. The two Gallipoli stays put the sea season until September.
October The same two Gallipoli stays call October a quieter month. Italia.it says the sea is still warm in autumn and the climate is mild.
November November is the last month the five stays with a March to November season confirm. Twenty stays confirm they are open.
December Only 14 stays confirm they are open: the 12 year-round stays, Hotel Residence Il Porto and Masseria Acquasale.

2026 calendar: these dates belong to 2026 and will move in other years. The 52nd Festival della Valle d’Itria ran from July 14 to August 2, 2026 in Martina Franca, and the comune of Ostuni published an Estate Ostuni 2026 program for the whole summer season. Check the organizers for the year you travel.

When can I swim?

No official source we hold gives a first or last day for swimming. Italia.it says beach days are still good from May to June and in September at Torre dell’Orso, and its autumn page, written with Regione Puglia, says the sea is still warm in autumn. Take both as general guides, not a promise for your week.

Two Gallipoli stays, Palazzo Flora and Palazzo Presta, name May to September for the sea. Beach facilities keep their own calendars. Only 5 of the 169 stays confirm a beach club: Le Dune Suite Hotel near Porto Cesareo, Masseria Calderisi and Masseria Torre Coccaro in Fasano and Savelletri, Il Melograno near Monopoli and Hotel Gargano in Vieste.

A pool is easier to find than a beach club. Of the 169 stays, 106 confirm a pool and 16 confirm a heated one, which may help outside summer. Rules also apply on the coast: italia.it notes that swimming and sunbathing are banned at the Roca Vecchia archaeological site.

The autumn and winter guide covers the heated pools and spas in more detail.

Is July and August too crowded?

July and August are the busiest months, by italia.it’s account, though we hold no visitor figures. It names them as the peak months at Torre dell’Orso, and says Lama Monachile, the most photographed place in Polignano, is always very crowded in the summer months.

Its Polignano guide advises arriving early in the morning, which is also sensible at any small, popular cove in Monopoli and Polignano.

Summer is also when towns run their calendars: Ostuni’s comune publishes a summer program, and the Festival della Valle d’Itria, organized by the Fondazione Paolo Grassi, fills Martina Franca and other historic sites of the Valle d’Itria. The 2026 dates are in the note under the month table, and the upcoming events calendar on Andiamo in Puglia (in Italian) covers the rest of the region.

In the Salento, italia.it lists summer fairs and the Notte della Taranta, which lasts 18 consecutive days and ends with the Concertone in Melpignano. At Gallipoli it says the beach lidos turn into discos at night. In Lecce it recommends sunset for seeing the monuments, especially in summer.

For the open-air site at Roca Vecchia, italia.it says a visit in the cooler months of the shoulder season lets you appreciate the details more than the intense summer heat does. Andiamo in Puglia’s guide to Puglia out of season (in Italian) has a longer list of things to do between October and April.

Which months are our stays open?

Only 25 of the 169 stays confirm their opening months. As of October 27, 2026, 12 are open all year, among them Bianco Riccio Suite Hotel in Savelletri, Le Dune Suite Hotel near Porto Cesareo and Masseria Prosperi near Otranto. Palazzo Colombo, Palazzo Flora and Palazzo Presta in Gallipoli and Masseria Terre di Traiano in Andria say March to November, the Region’s register gives Masseria Baroni Nuovi near Brindisi the same months, and eight more give other seasons.

For January and February, 12 stays are confirmed open, and 14 for December. From May to September, all 25 are.

The other 144 show “not confirmed” on their stay pages because their official sites give no months. Ask before you assume they close.

Masseria Prosperi says on its spa page that it is open all year. Le Dune Suite Hotel says it welcomes guests every day of the year, and Bianco Riccio Suite Hotel cites its annual opening.

Which months suit a long weekend, a week or a wedding?

Choose May, June or September for a beach week on the Salento coast, and a town base outside July and August for a long weekend. That is our editorial view, built on the sources above, with no weather data behind it. For a wedding, opening months come first: only 9 of the 67 wedding stays confirm theirs.

For a long weekend, a town gives you more to do when the restaurant at your stay is closed. In Lecce, italia.it describes the Teatro Politeama Greco as the home of opera and symphonic seasons, without giving months. Bari and Trani is a town-and-coast base too, and its area page says a stay there does not depend on a beach season.

For a week, use two bases, as in where to stay in Puglia, and check each stay’s months. Is Puglia worth visiting? sets out who the region suits. For a trip with children, Puglia with kids lists the stays that confirm they welcome them.

For a wedding, six venues say they are open all year, among them Bianco Riccio Suite Hotel in Fasano and Savelletri and Le Dune Suite Hotel in the Gallipoli area. For the other 61 wedding stays, ask which months they host weddings and how far ahead they book.

A note for readers in the Southern Hemisphere

The seasons are reversed. July and August, the peak months in Puglia, fall in the Southern Hemisphere’s winter, and Christmas and New Year fall in Puglia’s winter.

If you travel from Australia in December or January, you arrive in the months where the fewest stays confirm they are open: 14 in December and only the 12 year-round stays in January. Ask before you book, and consider a town base such as Lecce. Italia.it describes its Teatro Politeama Greco as the home of opera and symphonic seasons, so check the theater’s calendar for your dates.
